The Riverside High School Athletic Booster Club is committed to providing student-athletes at Riverside High School the very best facilities, equipment, protection and opportunities. We raise funds for uniforms, training equipment and team support.
Since opening its doors in 1991, Riverside High School has made a name throughout our state, and nationally at times, as a school with a winning athletic tradition. Wrestling began at Riverside under the leadership of Mr. James Key. Since then, a number of outstanding coaches have lead the program: James Key (1991-1994); Mike Merrit (1994-1996) Walt Tolarchyk (1996-2010) Brandon Palmer (2010-Present). With over 80 state placers, 40+ individual state champions, seven team state titles, and producing over 75 collegiate student-athletes, the wrestling program at Riverside has strongly contributed to our school’s athletic legacy.
Due to challenging socioeconomic factors, we’ve struggled to properly equip our wrestlers with the resources they need to maintain success. Riverside is in dire need of new wrestling mats. The current practice mats were purchased by Jim Key when the school opened in 1991. With our season fast approaching, we are hoping to open our wrestling mat fundraising campaign to the public. There are several rips in the mat and entire sections with exposed foam (where the protective covering has come off). As you may or may not know, this is a serious health concern for our student-athletes. While we do everything in our power to prevent breakouts, exposed foam increases the risk for skin infection cases tenfold.
We understand that this is a “big ticket” purchase, costing upwards of $10,500. Under the proper conditions wrestling mats can have a 15-20 year lifespan. It is with the support of our families, and good people like yourself, that our kids have an opportunity at an otherwise uncharted path to success. We thank you for your time and consideration. We look forward to your momentous role in working alongside our program so that kids, seeking opportunities in the greater Durham area, feel empowered to reach their goals. Please feel free to pass this along to anyone you feel can help our cause.
